During the 16th century, the Portuguese wanted to live in the kingdom, so they agreed to supply firearms to King Taksin. Their right to live in the kingdom was granted and a plot of land was given to the Portuguese on 14 September 1769. This day became known as the Feast of the Triumph of the Holy Cross. The church was built in 1770 and was named Santa Cruz, which means Holy Cross. In 1916, Italian architects, Annibale Rigotti and Mario Tamagno, re-designed the modern, Neo-Baroque church.
