No Photos – Just Memories

Last year, I took the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Rotterdam Centraal.

If you have never travelled by this mode of transport before, you should (when we can go further than our front doors again). It’s such a lovely way to travel.

You have to check in around an hour before departure, no hanging around airport terminals for hours. You have to go through security, but you can take food and drinks onboard (a whole bottle of red for the journey!)

Then, all you need to do is enjoy the ride! Depending on the time of day, you get to enjoy the scenery as the train makes its way under the Channel and onwards through France, Belgium and The Netherlands.

It’s so relaxing, and when you arrive at your destination, you are smack-bang in the middle of the city, no need for airport transfers.

On this particular trip, I sat next to 3 young men who were off to Amsterdam on the stag weekend of the guy sitting opposite me. They must have been in their 20s.

They were all rather quiet and it was nice chatting with them. After we had pulled out of Brussels-Midi/Zuid, a bottle of Whiskey was produced from one of their backpacks.

I was merrily making my way through my bottle of wine, so when they starting playing “Never have I ever” I found myself involved in their game. If you don’t know, “Never have I ever” goes something like this…..You say “Never have I ever broken a bone,” for example, and everyone else who has broken a bone puts their hands up and drinks! It can get as risque or outlandish as you like!

By the time we arrived in Rotterdam, a couple sitting on the other side of the aisle were involved in our little game and the guys were all feeling the effects of the numerous Whiskey shots they had gulped down – it was all good fun.

By the time I left, Jack (one of the guys) had invited me to meet them in Amsterdam for a few drinks. As I got up to leave, Matt (the one who was getting married) jumped up, hugged me and said: “I can’t believe you’re leaving!” “It was so nice to meet you!” Ah, the Whiskey talking maybe, but it made me smile and realise what a great time you can end up having if you only speak to people.

After a weekend with Chris, I found myself in Amsterdam walking around with my camera. I stopped to have a beer by a canal and thought to myself “Do you know what, I am going to message Jack and see where they are.”

Jack replied with their location and I went to meet them.

What a great afternoon that was! I had a few drinks with them before parting company and going on my merry way. I smiled as I walked away. I had the pleasure of meeting them and was invited to be part of Matt’s stag weekend – just from saying “Hello!”

It’s the simple things in life that give the most delight!

The Changing Seasons – March 2020

The Changing Seasons post, hosted by Su at Zimmerbitch.

Well, I didn’t do much in March apart from visiting the living room, bedroom and garden, so there really isn’t much to tell.

So, we are in lockdown! What a horrible time for all of us at the moment and who knows when it will end. We have been separated from our loved ones, our freedom has been taken away and hundreds are dying every day. My heart and thoughts go out to everyone who has lost loved ones. It’s just heartbreaking.

We can’t control what is happening, but we can control how we react to it. Try to keep positive and look for silver linings in everything you do. Look after your emotional and physical health – getting out for exercise helps. Use your time productively and work on any projects that you never usually have time for or take advantage of art galleries and travel websites that have ventured into the virtual world allowing you to see art or visit destinations online.

All I can say is, we will get through this (positivity) and we will get back to some sort of normality soon! In the meantime, stay safe and keep healthy. Much love to all of you 🙂

I’ll leave you with this uplifting tune from The Thrillseekers – guaranteed to make you smile, dance or both!

The Canals of Amsterdam

One of the things you think about when you think of Amsterdam is its canals.

Amsterdam’s canals have earned the city the name “Venice of the North” and the canals themselves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is so much to see in Amsterdam, but walking along the canals is a pleasure in itself.

I hope you enjoyed the walk along the canals. Much love.

Flying Solo – A Woman on the Wings of Life

I am very pleased to announce the publication of my second book:

Flying Solo. A Woman on the Wings of Life

When I went travelling, I sent emails home so my family and friends knew what I was doing. When I moved to Thailand, I turned those emails into a blog and that’s how TalkingThailand was born.

Later on, I decided to write a book about my travels and it was these emails that formed the basis for Flying Solo. A Woman on the Wings of Life.

This book covers a 14 year period of my life when I found the courage to step outside of my comfort zone and go in search of answers that would change my life. It recounts the chapters of my life from travelling to living in Thailand. You’ll also be introduced to some of the people I met and the lessons I learned about myself along the way.

Flying Solo - A Woman on the Wings of Life

Flying Solo. A Woman on the Wings of Life is available to buy on Amazon and Amazon Kindle.

I hope that you enjoy my tales!

The Changing Seasons – February 2020

The Changing Seasons post, hosted by Su at Zimmerbitch.

What crazy times we are truly living in at the moment. Who knows what the next few weeks or months will hold for us, but I hope everyone of you is safe and healthy.

I had a quiet February, but I learned a few interesting things. The first of which was the date of the 2nd February 2020 is a Palindrome – a number which reads the same forwards as it does backwards. So, 02022020 – 02022020. 2nd February 2020 will be the only time a Palindrome appears this century.

Also, in February, storms Ciara, Dennis and Jorge have made this the wettest February we’ve had for a while. Storm names go in alphabet order and alternative between male and female names. So, why did we have Jorge instead of Ellen after Dennis? Well, I learned that storm Jorge has affected a lot of Spain, so AEMET – the Spainish Met Office named it, so our Met Office decided to keep the name. This means that the next storm to hit the UK will be called Ellen.

I spent the last day of February being a tourist in Barcelona. It was my first time there and I had a fabulous time wandering around the city. I will write about my trip in more detail, but for now, here are a few of the places I visited.

The Changing Seasons – January 2020

The Changing Seasons post hosted by Su at Zimmerbitch.

Well, what a start to January 2020! The very first day of the new year, I got to spend a glorious day with my best friend and life partner – Chris! (He loves it when I call him my life partner! Hee hee)

Things to do in Brussels
Chris and me

We both used to live in Bangkok and saw each other all the time and now he lives in Rotterdam and I live in the UK we don’t get to see each other often, so when he came to meet me in Brussels, it was a very special day.

I met him at Gare du Midi train station just after 10 a.m. and we went for coffee to warm up.

We spent the rest of the day walking around. We went to the Christmas market near St Nicholas church and had hot rum – not the nicest drink I have ever had. You could smell the fumes from the alcohol as you took a drink. I ended up throwing mine away, but Chris enjoyed his!

After some more wandering, we settled in the lovely Cafe Metteko which reminded us of one of our favourite haunts in Bangkok – Cafe des Stagieres.

We stayed at Cafe Metteko until it was time for Chris to head back to Rotterdam on the train. We had such a lovely day together – reminiscing about the past, making new memories for the future, but more than that – we had a lot of fun, as always. You know when you just get on with someone – that’s Chris and I!

The next day, I took myself off to Bruges. I spent 4 hours wandering around, snapping away with my camera.

I walked around the city..

I also made a bee-line for the canals and one of the prettiest streets in Bruges – according to the Rough Guide to Belgium!

Bridges over the Nieuwe Maas

On a sightseeing day around Rotterdam with my tour guide – Chris, we walked down to the river Nieuwe Maas (New Meuse) – a distributary of the Rhine River – which divides Rotterdam into north and south.

The north and south are connected by several bridges and the two that caught my attention were the Erasmusbrug and Willemsbrug.

The Erasmusbrug is a cable-stayed and bascule bridge which connects the north and south of Rotterdam. It is named after Desiderius Erasmus who was one of the greatest scholars of the Northern Renaissance (Wikipedia).

The Willemsbrug connects the north with Noordereiland and is another cable-stayed bridge. It was named after King Willem III of the Netherlands (Wikipedia).

I’ve had a thing for bridges for a while now. I love the different styles of bridges and these two in Rotterdam make the grade! In my eyes anyway!
